Ledger® Live: Desktop — Getting Started with Ledger

A practical, security-first guide to installing Ledger Live Desktop, initializing your Ledger hardware wallet, protecting your recovery phrase, managing apps and accounts, and performing secure transactions.

Overview

Ledger Live Desktop is Ledger’s official application for managing Ledger hardware wallets on a desktop environment. It provides a central place to initialize devices, install blockchain-specific apps, manage multiple accounts, construct and broadcast transactions, and apply firmware updates—all while ensuring private keys stay on-device. This guide focuses on the desktop workflow and practical security steps to minimize risk during setup and everyday use.

What you’ll need

  • A Ledger hardware device (Ledger Nano S Plus, Nano X, or compatible model) bought from an official seller.
  • A personal desktop computer (Windows, macOS, Linux) with an up-to-date OS and browser.
  • A data-capable USB cable (or Bluetooth for Nano X when using mobile later).
  • Secure offline backup materials for your recovery phrase (paper, metal plate, or similar).
  • Approximately 30–45 minutes for the initial setup and backups.

Step 1 — Download Ledger Live safely

Open a secure browser and navigate to ledger.com/start. The site will detect your operating system and present the correct Ledger Live installer. Verify the HTTPS lock and domain before downloading to avoid phishing sites. If installer signatures or checksums are available, verify them to confirm download integrity.

Step 2 — Install and open Ledger Live

Run the downloaded installer and follow on-screen prompts. On Windows, administrative permission may be required to install drivers. After installation, launch Ledger Live. If an update is available, allow Ledger Live to update before continuing — updates often contain important security fixes.

Step 3 — Initialize or restore your Ledger device

When connecting a new Ledger device, you’ll be prompted to either set up a new device or restore from an existing recovery phrase. If creating a new device, the hardware will generate a recovery phrase (typically 24 words) that you must record in order. Use the provided recovery sheet or a robust metal backup to store the phrase offline. During setup, the device will require you to confirm selected words to ensure accuracy.

Step 4 — Set a PIN and optional passphrase

Protect your device with a PIN. The PIN prevents unauthorized local access to the hardware when connected. Ledger devices use randomized PIN entry to reduce the risk of host-side logging. Optionally, enable a passphrase to create a hidden wallet: this acts as an extra secret (like an additional word) and creates a separate wallet derivation that is only accessible when the exact passphrase is provided. Use passphrases only if you understand the recovery implications.

Step 5 — Pair Ledger Live and install apps

In Ledger Live, select Get started, choose your setup option, and connect the device when prompted. Use the Manager tab to install blockchain apps on the device for the networks you intend to use (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.). Installing an app enables the device to interpret and sign transactions for that blockchain; private keys remain isolated on the device.

Step 6 — Add accounts and view balances

After installing apps, add accounts from the Accounts tab. Ledger Live will derive public addresses from your device and display balances and transaction history. Use account names and labels to keep multiple wallets organized. For tokens and smart-contract ecosystems, ensure the relevant chain app is installed and up to date.

Step 7 — Firmware updates and device health

Regularly check Ledger Live for firmware updates. Firmware updates deliver security patches and new features. When applying firmware updates, follow on-screen instructions and confirm progress on the device. Do not interrupt an update mid-process. If you encounter issues, consult official support resources before attempting manual recovery.

Sending and receiving securely

To receive funds, select an account and click Receive. Always verify that the address shown in Ledger Live exactly matches the address displayed on your Ledger device before sharing it. When sending funds, construct the transaction in Ledger Live, check the fees and recipient address, then approve the transaction on the device. Rely on the device display as the authoritative confirmation to protect against host-based tampering.

Security best practices

  • Only download Ledger Live from ledger.com/start or official app stores.
  • Never reveal your recovery phrase to anyone. Ledger support will never ask for it.
  • Keep multiple physical backups of your recovery phrase in geographically separated secure locations.
  • Verify all transaction details on the hardware device screen before approving.
  • Keep Ledger Live, device firmware, and your OS up to date.
  • Consider multisig or multiple devices for large holdings to reduce single-point risk.

Troubleshooting — quick fixes

Device not recognized

  • Swap the USB cable and port. Prefer direct motherboard ports over hubs.
  • Restart Ledger Live and the device. On Windows, verify driver installation if prompted.
  • Close applications that might be accessing USB devices (VMs, other wallets).

App installation issues

  • Free up on-device storage by removing unused apps from Manager.
  • Ensure device firmware is compatible with the app you are trying to install.

Transaction errors

  • Confirm network connectivity and adjust fee settings if the network is congested.
  • Check that the correct account and network are selected in Ledger Live.

Advanced topics

Passphrase strategies

A passphrase can create multiple hidden wallets derived from the same recovery phrase. Use it for added privacy or plausible deniability, but document and back up passphrase material securely—losing it results in permanent loss of the associated wallet.

Multisignature & institutional setups

For substantial holdings or institutional custody, consider multisignature arrangements that distribute signing authority across devices and parties. Multisig requires careful configuration and recovery planning—test thoroughly before moving large sums.

Exporting data safely

Ledger Live allows exporting transaction histories for accounting and audits. When sharing exports, remove or redact personally identifying information and never include your recovery phrase or private keys.

Reminder: Your recovery phrase is your only backup for funds. Keep it offline, secure, and duplicated in separate safe locations.
